In this workshop, there are two parts.
1) Making English system computers Japanese capable (both PC and Mac)
2) Publishing your syllabus online

1) Making English system computers Japanese capable (both PC and Mac)

In order to take the full benefits of the discussion, please check the operating system (Windows 95 or Mac OS 8.6, etc.) and version of Microsoft Office (97/98/2000) of your school/home computer and lab where you can possibly conduct your class. Questions are highly encouraged during the presentation. Internet and non-internet issues are welcome.

Last touch to make you enable Japanese over the internet
For both platforms, you may have to play with browser setting. Here are examples with Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.

2) Putting your syllabus online

In this workshop, we have PC workstation with English operating system. Although this is not the ideal situation to be working with Japanese, anytime possible, we address the issue of how to include Japanese.

Some institutions now require all teachers to publish their syllabus online for easy access. More and more students visit web site when making a decision which class to take. Publishing your syllabus online could become just another skill, such as using a copy machine or using a VCR in class in the near future.

Basic assumption of this portion of the workshop is that you are familiar with wordprocessing using Word, but are not familiar with publishing on the Web. Although there are ways to go about this task, saving Word document as HTML and publish it on the Web is going to be the method used. If the version of Word is 2000, you should be able to include Japanese just fine. For those who are advanced, it is appreciated if you could help out neighbors, or try out some more advanced tasks.

In this exercise, you will be able to create an online syllabus containing text, graphics and hyperlinks and publish to the internet (uploading).

In this exercise, the assumption of this writing is going to be using a free Web page service. Such a service usually allows you to upload using graphical interface without a separate software. In your real situation (to upload to your server space in your educational institution), you are most likely going to need a separate software (Most are free).

Advanced participants can work on using Netscape Composer (in the Netscape Communicator suite) and versions 4.72 or later will work with Global IME to input Japanese. Or you can tackle with raw html (more control) using my Easy Homepage.

If you are working with Mac OS with Japanese Language Kit (JLK), you will have less worries inputting Japanese. Word Save as HTML, Netscape Composer will let you input Japanese just fine. If you follow Easy Homepage instruction using SimpleText Japanese, you can manipulate Japanese just fine. (Then you might as well use BBEdit Lite, which is Japanese capable, free and has a powerful features. http://www.barebones.com)

このワークショップでは、海外で使われている英語のシステムで、日本語をどのように使えるようにするかという点と、コース概略をウェッブページとして、インターネットにのせる方法を紹介、体験していただきたいと思う。

１）英語のシステムで日本語を使う（ウィンドウズとマック）

各学校や家庭、ラボのコンピュータのオペレーティングシステム（Windows95 Mac　OS　8.6など）とマイクロソフトのオフィス（特にワード）のバージョン （９７／９８／２０００など）を予め調べていただけるとありがたい。インターネットに関することでもそうでないことでもよいので、じっくり質問していただきたい。

日本語ができるようになってからのインターネットのセッティング
ウィンドウズもマックもブラウザー （InternetExplorerや Netscape Navigator）のセッティングを変えなければならない。

２）コース概略をウェッブページとしてインターネットにのせる方法

このワークショップでは英語のウィンドウズのコンピュータを使うことになっている。必ずしも日本語を使うのに最適の環境とは言えないが、どのようにして日本語を使うかというのは随時折り込んでいきたい。

教育機関によってはコース概略を必ずインターネットにのせなければならないと言われるところもある。学生がウェッブページを読んでどのクラスをとるか決めるということも増えてきて、コース概略をウェッブで出版するということは、コピー機やビデオの使い方を知っているというような教師の不可欠なスキルになっていくのではないだろうか。

ここでは、ワークショップ参加者がウェッブページの作り方は知らないが、マイクロソフトワードを使って、ワードプロセッサーには慣れているということを想定している。今回はワードのファイルをHTMLとして保存するという方法をとることになった。ワードのバージョンが２０００であれば、日本語も可能なはずである。このようなことにすでに慣れていらっしゃる方は、周りの人をチェックするか、他の方法を使って高度なことをやっていただきたい。

ここでは、文章、画像とハイパーリンクを含んだコース概略ページを作って、インターネット上に出版する（アップロード）するところまでもっていきたい。

今回はただでウェッブページを持たせてくれるサービスを利用するので、今回はウェッブページからアップロードできるようになっていると思われるが、実際にそれぞれの教育機関がそのようになっていることは少ないので、別にただで使えるソフトウェアを使うことになるかもしれない。

ウェッブページ出版に慣れている参加者はNetscape　Composerを使って（バージョン4.72以上であれば日本語可能）か、HTMLそのものを使って作る練習を シュナイダーのEasy Homepageを使ってしていただきたい。

マックで日本語キットを使えば日本語使用はとても楽である。ワードをHTMLとして保存する方法、 Composerを使う方法ともまず大丈夫である。Easy Homepageをシンプルテキストですると日本語も簡単に入る。（よく似ているがフリーウェアのBBEdit Liteは http://www.barebones.com からできて、いろいろな便利な機能がついている。）
