Featured speaker

Rushton Hurley

Rushton Hurley graduated with a degree in history from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas where he focused on Asian religious history. After spending three years in Japan and Australia, he returned to the United States to do graduate work at Stanford University. He has master's degrees in Education and East Asian Studies.

Mr. Hurley began teaching Japanese at Silver Creek High School in San Jose, California, in the fall of 1993. Over eight years, he built one of the largest Japanese language programs in the country and explored a variety of projects, including a research program focusing on the applications of speech recognition technology in beginning language learning.

In the summer of 2001, Mr. Hurley returned to San Antonio, Texas, where he began working with charter schools. After a semester as principal of the Jubilee Academic Center, he was tapped to head a Texas Education Agency pilot project for an online high school with the Southwest Preparatory Virtual School, where he works now as principal.

In addition to languages and technology, Mr. Hurley is an avid juggler. He credits whatever ability he has to the tutelage of Mr. Matthew Hall, with whom he taught Japanese at Silver Creek.
