I: Overview of IT component
Goals: Participants will be able to
1. Enhance their knowledge and skills of word processor, e-mail and web browser software for their daily activities using the computer by making it Japanese capable and taking advantage of bookmark organization site
2.Gain skills to utilize the Internet to collect information/materials and authentic materials for materials development, solicit information on grants and professional development while knowing copyright limitations.
3. (Possibly) publish their syllabus online and create exercises online for advocacy and class use.

From Participants' Survey
- Ideas about meaningful Internet projects and assignments for first and fourth year students
-Stable and Useful Web resources, build a class web page that includes high quality sites related to our units in class, or Japanese culture and language in general
-Windows computer and Japanese capabilities (KanjiKit and more)
-Beyond keypal projects (sound & video), sites to practice hiragana katakana without Japanese capable computer
-Japanese capability on Mac, distance learning, building a web page
-Japanese capability in Windows computer

II: Topics

Saturday homework
Find resources that can be used in your thematic unit or possible teaching situations. Cite as complete as possible, summarize and later add reflection for classroom application. We will share some of the findings on the second day.

According to Computer Services...
Students can use any of our labs for homework -- we have PC labs in Bicentennial Hall, Voter, and Sunderland; and Mac labs in Voter and Sunderland. Hours for the labs vary and are posted on the doors.

2. Japanese capability issues

2-1 Making English system computers Japanese capable (both PC and Mac)
In order to take the full benefits of the discussion, please check the operating system (Windows 95 or Mac OS 8.6, etc.) and version of Microsoft Office of your school/home computer and lab where you can possibly conduct your class. Questions are highly encouraged during the presentation. Internet and non-internet issues are welcome.

2-2 Windows-based:
Windows 2000
Multilingual capability is there. You have to make sure your computer is upgradable to 2000. Check hardware requirements. After all, 2000 is an NT upgrade and you will have less trouble buying the 2000 system installed rather than upgrading from 9x. If you have Office 2000, multilingual function should work flawlessly. Other software might have backward compatibility problems. You may still need Japanese version of software (e.g. PhotoShop J) to make fully Japanese capable.

Windows 95/98/ME
My article on winter issue of AATJ newsletter: MS Global IME and Word 2000
http://www.asu.edu/clas/dll/jpn/aatj/articles/schneider9910.html Global IME works with Netscape Communicator 4.72 or later (Latest is 4.75) Greg Dablestein sensei reported MS Messenger (instant messaging tool) is also Global IME compatible. Me still seems to have some old software conflicts.

Also refer to Netscape Global IME Support at
http://home.netscape.com/eng/intl/gimesupport.html

Third party software that makes it possible.
(List provided by Tae Kunisawa of University of Alberta)
Word processor only solutions:
1 JWP
ftp://ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/00INDEX.html
2. JWPce
http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/jwpce.html

3.AsianSuite 97
Go to http://www.unionway.com and download evaluation version which allows you to use the software for 60 days free.
You can type, send e-mail and make homepage in Japanese with this.

4.Kanjikit 2000
This is similar to AsianSuite 97 http://www.pspinc.com/lsg/kkit/index.htm

5. NJStar
Although Kunisawa sensei left it out from the list, NJStar is also very popular. Similar to Kanji Kit and Asian Suite. Real version is said to be a lot better than demo version.
http://www.njstar.com/

WindowsXP
This latest Operating system is said to be the upgrade to Windows 98, ME and Windows 2000 with the language capabilities of Windows 2000. (supposed to come out in October).

2-3 Apple/MacIntosh
Mac OS X
OS "ten" is the latest system that was released this March and it is Unix-based. Therefore software needs to be upgraded for this system. You also need G3 or later with 128MB of physical RAM!!! To make sure if your computer is upgradable http://www.apple.com/macosx/requirements/

Japanese is supported from the start and Hiragino mincho provides beautiful Japanese font with so much control.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/theater/fontpanel_japanese.html

It is said that interface language also changes when you use OSX.

Mac OS 9
Japanese Language Kit (along with other languages) comes with the system. Catch? You have to have PowerPC processor and huge memory to run it. That means some Performa (4-digit ones) machines are lucky to be able to upgrade but nothing older.

Step-by-step graphical instruction on how to install Language kit, by Yasuhiro Omoto sensei from UC Berkeley.
http://www.nihongoweb.com/Computing/JLK.html

Mac OS 8.x or earlier
If you don't have JLK already, you are out of luck? Apple and other stores do not sell JLK anymore. But wait, if you have OS8.5 or 8.6, maybe you can view Japanese, but not to write. If you have 68030 based chip or later, you can install old version of Kanji Talk, Japanese system.
http://www.apple.co.jp/ftp-info/reference/kt753.html
Then you can later update to 7.5.5 with this updater.
http://www.apple.co.jp/ftp-info/reference/kt755.html

2-4 Last touch to make you enable Japanese over the internet
For both platforms, you may have to play with browser setting. Here are examples with Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.

If you can't print Japanese correctly and really desperate, print your page as graphic.

Free Japanese Reward Sticker site: Printing a web page
Please feel free to print and use. What you can do is to buy full sheet label paper, and print it and literally cut them into pieces! In my monitor and printer, you will get 96 stickers per a sheet. (I don't know if this matters, but my monitor is set 640x480). Please take advantage of it. It is free, but please don't claim this is your job and please don't sell it as yours (Maybe just lable cost to distribute.)

9. Publish your syllabus online
9-1 Creating your document
http://www.geocities.com/atjjuly2001/sample.html

Today we are using Netscape Composer (html editor that comes with Netscape Communicator).and publish in a free web space from GeoCities to the account. It does have pop-up ads, but the functionality was the best I have tried from the free pages.

9-1-1 Preparation:
Open the page above.v File ->Edit Page to open with Composer
Save as by changing the name to yourname.html

9-1-2 Making sure Japanese will show (character set):
Go to Format->Page Properties->Meta Tag
First we make sure Japanese will show by setting the character set
Click New
In Name, type Content-Type
In value, type text/html; charset=Shift_JIS
Click apply

9-1-3 Playing with colors:
Click Colors and Background: If you want to customerize background/text/link colors, click on customize, click on colors to choose what you like
If you want to show background pattern, do so here by specifying the location of the image.
Click OK and go back to text.

9-1-4 Format your text:
Edit as you like. You can change colors, make headlines and so forth.
Highlight the area, Format->Style, color
To input Japanese, change input method to kotoeri on top right.(or activate Japanese IME in Windows computer)

9-1-5 Create Hyperlink and email link
Link: Highlight the link part and Insert Link or click on chain icon
Type in URL
Email Link: Highlight the email and Insert Link or click on chain icon
Add "mailto:" before email address

7.Push Browse button to look for your files from your local computer. yourname.html
8.When you find it push Upload files.
9. Now your page is supposed to be showing on the WWW!
e.g. http://www.geocities.com/atjjuly2001/yourname.html
Continue to File Manager and click View next to the file name or type in URL.

9-3 Discussion of graphics/images How to "grab" graphics from Sample Face page. http://www.geocities.com/atjjuly2001/sample.html To use your most appropriate face, for Windows, hold right button of the mouse, for Mac, hold the button, and wait for the pop-up to come up and select "Save this image as..." and save the image with giving the name yourname.gif (e.g. schneider.gif)

9-3-1 Insert your face:
Click on the face to activate Insert->Image window
Browse to choose your choice of face
Click OK
(As you see, position of graphics is not quite exactly the same when you see in Composer and actual web page)

9-3-2 Where to get graphics (Always read fine print on copyright restrictions. Assume you can't use graphics on the web unless it specifically says you could.)
Graphics Gallery http://members.aol.com/Yschneller/graphics/index.html
mangekyou: http://www.media.ne.jp/web/kaleido/index.html
Icon Bazaar http://www.iconbazaar.com/
