There are two sections of the session to accommodate maximum participation of those who are interested around the globe. Keiko Schneider is the manager of senseiOnline list that is for those who are concerened about teaching Japanese. She uses TAPPED IN to organize live presentation called "benkyoukai" ("study forum" in Japanese). This session will appeal to:
1) Educators who are interested in online professional development using TAPPED IN.
2) Education leaders who maintain or are interested in building online communities.
3) Those who have heard about "benkyoukai", but never had guts to participate, but are quite curious.
4) Those who like to find out about senseiOnline community.
TAPPED IN (http://www.tappedin.org) is an online conference center hosting an international community of education professionals. Teachers, librarians, professional development staff, researchers and students engage in professional development programs and informal collaborative activities with colleagues and attend online discussions and classes. TAPPED IN is a virtual world that combines a clickable graphics area with a text input area into one window. To give an introduction to the environment, this paper will cover how the presenter has been using this environment and what she plans to do in the future. Because TAPPED IN is a large community, over 14,000 members, and because the sharing of experiences and lessons learned is encouraged and supported, members have a unique opportunity to learn first hand from each other about different projects in the environment.
One of the scheduled discussions is a monthly online forum called Benkyoukai (Japanese for "Study Forum") that is organized through senseiOnline listserv. We invite list members to contribute a short paper and have an online, live interaction with the author/presenter at TAPPED IN. (http://www.tappedin.org) The event is announced through senseiOnline listserv as well as TAPPED IN events calendar (http://www.tappedin.sri.com/cgi-bin/calendar/calendar.cgi)

Though TAPPED IN has been around since 1997, I am a relatively new member (September 2000). Although it is a rather short time, I am already fascinated by the potential of TAPPED IN. I am grateful for the supporters of TAPPED IN: NSF, SRI International, Sun Microsystems, various partner organizations, staff and community leaders. The community effort of TAPPED IN makes it much more than just an Internet site to chat and hang out. It is an online educational community where educators and students come to meet, learn, and work together. The user interface is going to change drastically later 2002. I am hoping that unicode will work to make Japanese input possible.
I do this to make sure whoever is joining is not interested just because somebody wants to send spam/unwanted advertisement messages. So it can be very brief. Understanding and cooperation on this matter is deeply appreciated.
They can take venue 2) as well, but they are going to get a message from the Manager anyway.
