Featured speaker

John Fahey

Technology Information Manager, (College of Liberal Arts)
University of Texas at El Paso
BA in French 1989
MA in Linguistics 2002

As a child, Mr. Fahey spent a year in Madagascar and studied at Lycˇe Technique Industrielle de Tananarive in French. He graduated from UTEP with a BA in French in 1989, but studied everything from Biology and Computer Science to Spanish and Chinese. For four years, he worked for a small Japanese computer company in Los Angeles, but returned to the area to work for the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez, Mexico in Teleinformatica and the Centro de Lenguas (Provided support for a Self-Access Language Lab). Since February of 1996, he has been at the current location.

As for living experience in Japan, in 1993 he spent 3 weeks in Japan training staff in troubleshooting computer problems, including one week in Osaka and one week in Tokyo. From 1994 to 1995 he also spent a total of 6 Months living in Tokyo, training staff and troubleshooting PCs with Japanese Windows in Akihabara.

His interest is not specifically in being a classroom instructor. He is interested in the use and development of new media technology for Language Instruction including CALL, using digital video, etc. The languages currently of interest to him are Japanese, French, Spanish, and Chinese. He has a large collection of CD-ROM software, much of which is designed for or may be used to assist language learning. He also tries to keep up with new materials via the Internet. The Internet itself is a great source for multi-lingual authentic material. He would like to explore its use as a language learning aid.

Short description of the presentation

The presenter hopes to discuss and get feedback on creating a project that would allow students to track their progess in a foreign language beyond a single classroom and teacher. The idea is to create a database (possibly using XML) to keep track of what a student knows and can perform in a foreign language. This could become an online open project. It could communicate via XML to other Language Learning software programs to track what a student has already learned and what a student needs to do next. It could be linked to online tests and quizes that measures where a student is at on standardized proficiency measures.

In the beginning, he would like to develop this for adults that want to take control and measure their own learning progress. At some point, this might have a use for younger learners.

The program could help in the production of digital materials for learners based on individual needs. These materials could include Mp3 audio clips, flash cards, quizes, language games, and other study materials. This program could recommend specific textbooks, reading materials, and other traditional study materials.
