SenseiOnline's 3rd Benkyou kai is on May 25th (Thursday), 2000 at 4pm PDT (1pm Hawaii, 7pm EDT, 11pm GMT; 26th Friday, 8am Japan, 9am Sydney, if this calculation is correct).

Featured speaker

John Fahey
Network Administrator, LACIT (Liberal Arts Center for Instructional Technology)
University of Texas at El Paso
MA candidate in Linguistics expects to finish in the summer of 2000

As a child, Mr. Fahey spent a year in Madagascar and studied at Lycée Technique Industrielle de Tananarive in French. He graduated from UTEP with a BA in French in 1989, but studied everything from Biology and Computer Science to Spanish and Chinese. For four years, he worked for a small Japanese computer company in Los Angeles, but returned to the area to work for the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez, Mexico in Teleinformatica (set up a Windows NT server on a Digital Alpha system) and the Centro de Lenguas (Provided support for a Self-Access Language Lab). Since February of 1996, he has been at the current position.

As for living experience in Japan, in 1993 he spent 3 weeks in Japan training staff in troubleshooting computer problems, including one week in Osaka and one week in Tokyo. From 1994 to 1995 he also spent a total of 6 Months living in Tokyo, training staff and troubleshooting PCs with Japanese Windows in Akihabara.

His interest is not particularly in being a classroom instructor. He is interested in the use and development of new media technology for Language Instruction including CALL, using digital video, minidisks, etc. The languages currently of interest to him are Japanese, French, Spanish, and Chinese. He has a large collection of CD-ROM software, much of which is designed for or may be used to assist language learning. He also tries to keep up with new materials via the Internet. The Internet itself is a great source for multi-lingual authentic material. He would like to explore the possibilities for its use as a language learning aid.

What is going to happen?

We will use one of his articles for reference."Enhancing Language Learning through Electronic Reading"

Registered members are encouraged to go to www.eGroups.com, my groups, click on files to the left and find 3rd benkyoukai folder. You can download Word file or Visit http://utminers.utep.edu/jfahey/jfahey.html

So you read that beforehand and go to chat room with World Without Borders. There will be John sensei and other participants. Since WWB is open to everybody I would like to invite whoever is interested in this kind of topic.

Where to go

This event is open to anybody who is interested in the topic. Please go to World Without Borders meeting place at the following URL. http://www.worldwithoutborders.com/calendar/meeting.shtml. If you are not already registered, you have to get a screen name and password. Please keep this information for the future record. Then once you get to Conference Room A and you will see a link from there. A Java enabled browser, such as Netscape 3.0 or higher is required to enter the chatroom.

This event is hosted by World Without Borders and sponsored by Apple Computers, Inc. Higher Education. The Meeting Place is the place to come for ideas, product info, to discuss the issues, to air concerns. This weekly educator's roundtable, sponsored by The Apple Learning Community Connection, is the place to find out how Apple products and technologies can help institutions enhance learning opportunities and advance educational innovation. Educators of all platforms are welcome. "If learning is an act of exploration, then technology equips the explorer for the journey of a lifetime."

To participate in Web chat you need Netscape or Internet Explorer versions 3.0 or above with java enabled. The computer itself also needs enough CPU power and available RAM memory. Yet those at institutions behind firewalls may also find that Web chat access is blocked.

This Web chat provider can "push" URLs from within a chat room, automatically opening another browser window when you click on an address starting with http://, so you can chat while viewing Web pages corresponding to the session. Some rooms have options below the chat window such as choosing the color of your words. WWB Chat staff members are always on hand at sessions to help you.
