Carl Falsgraf is director of the Center for Applied Second Language Studies, the Northwest National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University of Oregon. Sachiko Kamioka

Sachiko Kamioka is project coordinator at CASLS and takes the lead on multiple projects at the center. Her current projects include an online curriculum tool and materials development project, a national articulation project, and an online oral assessment project. Sachiko received her masterŐs degree in Japanese pedagogy from the University of Oregon in 1998. She began teaching Japanese to Vietnamese refugees in Japan in 1987, and since that time, has taught at various places including Japanese language schools in Japan, a high school and various universities in the U.S.

Short description of the presentation

Second language teachers have been focused on proficiency since the 1980s. Yet many classrooms continue to focus on abstract knowledge rather than communicative performance due to a lack of assessment and teaching tools. This presentation will introduce a system of online tools to make it possible -- even easy -- for Japanese teachers to focus their classrooms on proficiency.
