Featured speaker

Kyoko Saegusa

Currently Senior Instructor of Japanese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Colorado, Boulder, http://www.colorado.edu/ealld . Her main interest is in the affective aspects of language learning. She is also interested in theory and practice of translation.

Short description of the presentation

As Caleb Gattegno, one of the giants in the field of foreign language pedagogy, says, self-learning is the only learning, and that the learner must develop inner criteria, a good monitoring system, in order to learn. One good method of helping students develop such system is to give the task of teaching to students themselves. Saegusa has had students prepare exercises, activities, and sometimes quizzes and exams at all levels of Japanese language classes for the past 15+ years, and has had positive results overall. There are certain principles and requirements the teacher and students must be aware of and agree upon in order for this method to work. The challenge for the teacher is to stay out of students' learning process - to become a "lurker" ; the students' challenge is to take responsibility for their own learning and eventually walk away from the teacher. The process helps both the teacher and students grow into fuller human beings.
