Featured speaker

Matthew Hall

Matthew Hall began his love affair with Japan 18 years ago when he read James Clavell's Shogun. As his high school had no Japanese lessons, he was forced to wait until entering the University of Notre Dame (Go Irish!) before he could scratch that particular itch. As a sophomore he spent a year at Sophia University in Tokyo. After graduating with a double major in Philosophy and Japanese, he did a year of volunteer work at a teen psychiatric unit in Colorado before embarking upon a three-year stint as an ALT in Fukuoka on the JET Program. It is this experience that he most credits with his becoming a teacher. His post-JET experience includes two highlights: working at the Japanese Consulate in Chicago for two years and meeting Rushton Hurley, who recruited Matthew to go to Stanford University's STEP program. After graduating with his Master's in one year, Matt took his place at Rushton senpai's side learning the ropes of running a top-notch, accelerated Japanese high school program.
